Rahul Gandhi says Tata Group being “criminally destroyed”

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused the government of allowing the Tata Group to be “criminally destroyed” and questioned the silence of business leaders amid an escalating dispute over the conglomerate’s leadership.

In a post on X, Gandhi targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that Indian businesses were being treated as their personal property.

“Tata is being criminally destroyed, and no business leader dares say a word. How long will you stay silent? Until they own you?” Gandhi said.

“Indian business is not Narendra Modi and Amit Shah's plaything. You lack courage. We don't. We will ensure justice for these crimes,” he added. Moneycontrol +1

Gandhi’s remarks come amid a dispute between Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata and Tata Sons over the reappointment of N Chandrasekaran as chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group.

Noel Tata has challenged the validity of the resolution passed at a Tata Sons board meeting on September 17, alleging procedural irregularities. He has questioned the meeting’s agenda and sought access to its recordings and other documents to establish how the decision was taken.

The dispute has exposed differences over the interpretation of Tata Sons’ Articles of Association and the approval required for the chairman’s reappointment. The board has maintained that the resolution was valid, citing legal opinions supporting its position.

Tata Trusts collectively hold about 66% of Tata Sons, giving them significant influence over the conglomerate’s parent company.
