New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and DMK Youth Wing Secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested by police on Tuesday in connection with a case over his alleged derogatory remarks against Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and actor Trisha Krishnan.
The controversy erupted during a protest over the Cauvery water dispute in Thanjavur on Monday, where Udhayanidhi criticised Chief Minister Vijay, alleging that Tamil Nadu had not received a single drop of Cauvery water while the Chief Minister remained indifferent.
The rally took a contentious turn when members of the crowd chanted "Trisha, Trisha". Pausing briefly, Udhayanidhi responded with a remark widely interpreted as a double entendre, triggering sharp political criticism.
Following the incident, the TVK women's wing filed a complaint with the Thanjavur police and staged protests across several districts, demanding action against the DMK leader. TVK national spokesperson Pazha Selvakumar also approached the National Commission for Women (NCW), alleging that Udhayanidhi's remarks were defamatory, objectifying and sexually suggestive.
The DMK condemned the arrest, calling it an act of political vendetta. "Nothing was said against anyone. Udhayanidhi only pointed out Vijay's failures. There was nothing insulting in the speech, and he did not even name Trisha," DMK leader TKS Elangovan said.
Actor Trisha Krishnan had attended Chief Minister Joseph Vijay's swearing-in ceremony on May 10, drawing widespread attention. A video of her appearing emotional during Vijay's inaugural address later went viral on social media, adding to public speculation surrounding the controversy.
