All Parties Hurriyat Conference president Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday called for an end to wars and greater reliance on dialogue and diplomacy amid the ongoing tensions in West Asia, saying that “peace can only be established when there is justice”.
Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Mirwaiz made the remarks after Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met a delegation of Indian religious representatives, intellectuals and business leaders.
Mirwaiz said Pezeshkian’s message during the interaction centred on placing humanity at the heart of efforts to resolve conflicts.
“Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian conveyed a vital message here: if we are to work towards peace, the paramount consideration must be humanity itself. In this context, we feel that the present era is one for dialogue and diplomacy, not for war,” he said.
He called on those committed to human values to push for an end to armed conflicts and a return to negotiations.
“Everyone who believes in human values must emphasise that the time has come to end wars and embrace peace and dialogue; this is the only way to resolve the catastrophic situation that has arisen on a global scale,” he said.
Referring to the situation in Iran and Palestine, Mirwaiz urged the international community to speak out against what he described as excesses and oppression.
“If we look at the current situation, I believe we must ensure that voices are raised against the excesses and oppression taking place—whether in Iran or Palestine; the time to act has come,” he said.
He also called on global powers to send a strong message in favour of ending the conflict and creating space for negotiations.
“We feel that a strong message should go out from all global powers: the war must end, and dialogue and diplomacy must be given a chance so that the process of negotiation can begin,” Mirwaiz said.
