India has started supplying electricity to Nepal and will continue the exports until December 31, 2026, to help the neighbouring country meet its power requirements after devastating floods damaged hydropower infrastructure.
The Power Ministry said it had approved the export of up to 600 MW of electricity to the Nepal Electricity Authority through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit transmission line, and up to 54 MW through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit line.
The power will be supplied for 18 hours a day, from midnight to 6 pm, from September 13 to December 31.
The ministry said the quantum of electricity to be exported from January 2027 would be reviewed in December.
Nepal's domestic power generation capacity has been affected by damage to hydropower infrastructure following recent floods, creating an additional requirement for electricity, the ministry said.
“The approval will help Nepal meet its power requirements during this difficult period and further strengthen the close and longstanding energy cooperation between India and Nepal,” it said.
“India remains committed to supporting Nepal and strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector,” the ministry added.
The move comes after severe flooding in Nepal damaged infrastructure and affected power generation in several parts of the country. The disruption has increased the need for electricity imports as Nepal works to restore damaged infrastructure.
India and Nepal have maintained long-standing cooperation in the energy sector, including cross-border electricity trade and transmission links between the two countries.
