Madras HC issues notice after PIL seeks probe into Saurav Das’s identity, background
A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Madras High Court seeking an investigation into the identity of journalist Saurav Das and the blocking of his social media accounts over his comments on the judiciary.
The petitioner, Ganesh Kumar, has alleged that Das, referred to in the petition as 'Yogesh Sharma alias Saurav Das', made derogatory remarks about the judiciary, including judges of the Supreme Court.
The plea has sought an investigation into Das's nationality, identity and background, including details of his parents. It has also asked the Union government to cancel his passport and Aadhaar card if he is found to be a foreign national.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice SA Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan issued notices to Das, the Centre and other respondents, seeking their responses. The matter will be heard again after six weeks.
During the hearing, the petitioner's counsel referred to documents allegedly relating to Das's identity and addresses. The Bench examined the documents and sought clarification on certain details. It also questioned the alleged remarks made against the judiciary and asked whether the petitioner had approached the authorities.
The counsel submitted that a representation had been made to the Centre on October 7, 2026, but no action had been taken.
The petitioner has also sought directions to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to block Das's X and Instagram accounts and restrain him from making further allegedly derogatory remarks against the judiciary.
The petitioner was represented by advocate B Jaganath.
